The intersection of three family stories in contemporary Rwanda. A mother, trying to get over the loss of her son who died in an accident, gradually distancing herself from her husband; a petty criminal, living on the street, initiating his son into a life of thieving and violence; and a young woman, looking after her sick father who she has never truly loved, readying herself to donate an organ that might save his life.
This fourth feature by filmmaker Kivu Ruhorahoza, Father’s Day portrays the many sequels to the genocide and male violence, upheld by the patriarchy, with crystalline precision.
“We now have a generation of Rwandans born during or just after the genocide against the Tutsis and who are trying to understand their parents role in this national tragedy, or who learn fathering despite not having their own father. The genocide was mostly carried out by men against other men. And most of these male perpetrators fled the country or were sent to prison, thus creating a sad opportunity to rethink the fatherly role in our society for the coming decades. Fatherhood and the patriarchy in general are hot topics in Rwanda: these discussions inspired the writing for this film.” Kivu Ruhorahoza
