Figure speculari
(Silhouettes reflétées)
1940 - 1948
With its undulations and chimerical character, Figure speculari reveals a formai vocabulary of mystery.
Gillo Dorfles held a degree in medicine with a specialisation in psychiatry and aimed to express the mechanisms of the mind and psychic variations. He drew on pure, primordial forms devoid of any naturalistic analogy. His work was unusual in the world of post-war ltalian Abstraction and reflected an interest in Surrealism, German Expressionism and the works of Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. A painter, art critic, philosopher and teacher of aesthetics, he was one of the most protean intellectuals on the Milanese scene.
