Shonibare features a half-human, half-animal figure dressed in wax print, his fabric of choice.
This material, which was inspired by Indonesian patterns, produced by the Dutch and sold in the African colonies, became a symbol of African identity in the 1960s. The sculpture draws on a number of references to question the revolutionary ideal: it pays tribute to Eugène Delacroix' s famous painting, Liberty Leading the People (1830), the golden handgun is a replica of the one used by Muammar Gaddafi, who was killed in 2011, and the BlackBerry evokes the riots in London that same year, largely organised by teenagers using their phones.
