Zinelli produced an oeuvre whose visionary force and formai audacity drew the attention of Breton and Dubuffet, who exhibited his works in Paris in 1967.
The young Carlo Zinelli developed psychological problems during the Second World War. Discharged in 1941, he was interned for "paranoid schizophrenia". Silent and isolated, his creativity was revealed during the self-expression workshop set up in the Verona hospital in 1957. His work is characterised by the stylisation, repetition and variation in scale of his motifs, which are painted in solid colours, often perforated and surrounded by inscriptions. Here, the sky above the imaginary creatures is filled with birds whose flight resembles that of fighter jets.
