Le Christ d'Assy I, petit
[1950]
"It is the only Christ before whom anyone can pray." {André Malraux)
By fusing the body of Jesus with his cross, Germaine Richier addressed the mystery of the incarnation with an intimate sense of the sacred. The face is scarred and the disproportionately large arms are open to the world. Commissioned by Father Couturier, this Christ of pain, enlarged in bronze for the church in Plateau d'Assy (Haute-Savoie), was a success surrounded by an aura of scandal in 1951. Stored away out of sight in spite of protests from cultural circles and parishioners, it only returned to its place in 1969, ten years after the artist's death.
