Portrait d'Annie Dalsace
1923
Testament to a great friendship with the artist' s patrons, this painting presided over the foot of a huge staircase in the Maison de Verre (House of Glass).
With a composition of shimmering colours, the lady of the house is represented in full, dressed in a sumptuous outfit and holding a bunch of grapes, symbol of abundance and pleasure of the senses. Jean Lurçat' s friendship with Jean Dalsace dated back to their studies in Epinal. Following the war, his affections were extended to the couple formed by Dalsace with Annie born Bernheim. It was through them that the artist met Pierre Chareau, who commissioned upholstery from him to decorate certain pieces of furniture, particularly wing chairs and couches, for the Maison de Verre. This work by Lurçat is one of his most remarkable paintings.
