Smoke Hands

Smoke Hands (Dark) was inspired by tests carried out by Gerrard in early 2022 using an algorithm designed to generate images of smoke.

Smoke Hands (Dark) combines a gesture of offering with one of destruction and evokes the absurdity of our relationship with carbon-based energy, based on dependence and self-destruction. The artist summarises this position as follows: "I like the sense that we are holding an uncertain future in our hands-or that we are protecting a global petro system that is in essence impossible".
