Mobilier Cargo
1993
This furniture testifies to Sottsass's quest for multifunctionalism, as indicated by a preparatory drawing in which it is simultaneously a support for a hi-fi system, a TV stand and a bookshelf.
Ettore Sottsass was a member of Studio Alchimia when he created Cargo, which was presented at the “Bau.Haus” exhibition in 1979. The furniture consists of an assemblage of different modules in laminated plastic, positioned on a base covered with the Bacterio pattern, which would become emblematic of the future Memphis group. The slanting red shelf lends a dynamic to the structure, creating an imbalanced effect that was also found in contemporary and later productions.
