Etude pour une tapisserie à fentes, accrochée au mur, rouge-vert
1927 - 1928
Gunta Stölzl continued to study the interaction of colours via an interplay of visual effects produced by layering transparent and opaque fabrics to impel the onlooker’s gaze.
At the Bauhaus from 1919 to 1931, she took Johannes Itten’s foundation course and trained in the glass and mural painting studios. She joined the weaving workshop, taking over as manager in 1927. Stölzl was the only woman at the Bauhaus to be hired to this position. This preparatory study for the Red-Green Slit Tapestry comprises a tangle of moiré fabrics featuring rectilinear grids intersected by undulating swishes.
