Bois polychrome I
[1948 - 1949]
With this sculpture, Folmer shows a desire to free himself from the picture plane and project his work into space, even to confront architecture.
Not long after joining the Concrete Art movement, Georges Folmer began to develop a series of polychrome wood sculptures in parallel with his painting. The series consisted of assemblages of reclaimed wood whose parallelepiped form is countered by cubic or oblique transverse elements. This sculpture, which is treated with blacks of colour alternating with the raw surface of the wood, is, in the artist' s words, "like a painting with multiple faces".
