La loi normale des erreurs
2015 - 2020
With this accumulation of black monochrome paintings, Raphaël Denis gives shape to what might have been a bonfire of art works confiscated by the Nazis.
The installation refers to the fire in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris in 1943 that is believed to have reduced to cinders more than five hundred paintings and drawings by modern artists. The word "Vernichtet", meaning "destroyed" or "annihilated" in German, is written on the burned frames. This word figured on the index sheets for the goods the Nazis confiscated from Jews. The work sets out to denounce the censorship and destruction of cultural goods in the name of an ideology.
