The coat-stand
(Le porte-manteau)
1920
ln New York in 1920, Man Ray photographed the body of a naked woman, partly concealed - and thus mechanised - by a coat stand.
Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, a figure in Bohemian New York, may have been the model for the photograph. lt was published with the title Dadaphoto by Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray in the first and only issue of the New York Dada review in April 1921, shortly before Man Ray arrived in Paris. Evoking the Dadaist spirit of the collage, the work is reminiscent of the many readymade assemblages Man Ray made at the time, like the famous Obstruction, consisting of suspended coat hangers.
