L'Etreinte
2010 - 2014
Wang Keping was born in 1949 in Beijing, and has lived and worked in Paris since 1984. In 1979, he and Ma Desheng founded the first group of Chinese non-conformist artists, "The Stars" (Xing Xing). This collective, which strove to challenge the canons of socialist realism, enabled the artistic avant-garde to flourish in China. Wang Keping started out as a self-taught sculptor, and exhibited for the first time in 1979 with "The Stars". His first works with a political connotation made waves across the world, particularly in France, where they were exhibited in 1989 at the Centre Pompidou. Wang Keping was expelled from China in 1984, and decided to settle in Paris.
