Je suis innocent
2012
Politics, religion, the notions of identity and exclusion, and love too, stand at the heart of Adel Abdessemed’s work. In the photographic self-portrait Je suis innocent, the artist sets fire to himself in response to contemporary events: the uprisings of the Arab Spring, the civil war in Syria. His proud, hieratic and indomitable stance seems to express both indignation and great determination, yet this ambiguous and provocative image might equally represent the injustice of the world as an incitement to violence.
