When he was twenty, Segal associated with various European avant-gardes, and in 1914, he met artists in the Dada movement. Contemplating the cruelty of war, he devised a principle of ethical equality, which he expressed in painting through what he called «optical equivalence». His pictures are divided into equal geometric unities, all treated in the same way. In his abstract compositions, like Intérieur, no part dominates, and the viewer has to give equal attention to each element.
