(Lancer de couteau)

A major figure in contemporary art, Jeff Wall has for more than thirty years used photography in a critique and reconstruction of the Western pictorial tradition. As in several recent works, he here has models replay in front of the camera some scene close to their everyday life, in a mode he calls ‘near documentary.’ A carefully staged fake snapshot, Knife Throw revisits and brilliantly develops a number of themes central in Jeff Wall’s work: the absorbed figures, the relation between painting and photography, the equilibrium between narrative and description, the representation of a repressed violence. The knife-thrower is here a metaphor: like the photographer, he aspires to speed, and perfect aim.
