Anonyme calciné, Figure 19ème
1980
This work is part of a series of paintings which the artist picked up in flea markets and subjected to fire.
The technique of burning is a feature of Christian Jaccard's work. Here he used anonymous paintings from the 17, 18, 19 and 20th centuries, that he ignited with wicks. Portraits and religious or mythological scenes were stripped of their varnish and mounted, then slowly burned, resulting in the degradation of the coloured dyes. The transformation by heat created sections of images. ln a paradoxical process of masking/revealing, these forgotten works are restored to the history of painting.
