August is loosely inspired by the work of photographer August Sander.
Omer Fast shows Sander near the end of his life, when a Nazi officer who had come to ask him for a portrait, talked about his son who died in the Third Reich prison. Famous photographs turned into tableaux vivants haunt Sander's memory. The objective representation of his time sought to examine the connection between the general and the particular. But what can an image do in a world in crisis, devastated by the despotic erasure of memory? As often with Fast, the mental state of the character permeates the narrative form of the work.
