Zanele Muholi describes her work as “visual activism”, celebrating in her photographic portraits the community of black South African lesbians with whom she identifies, seeking to make visible their daily struggle against prejudice, physical attack or “corrective rape”. The Faces express the person, the Phases transitions between different expressions of gender and sexuality. The photographs never enter upon the subjects’ private lives, but reveal the beauty of bodies sensual, proud and vulnerable.
