Quartier des Halles, Paris
1951 - 1952
The neighbourhood of Les Halles inspired lfert to make formal photographie studies.
Swiss designer Gérard lfert is an important figure in the links between photography and the graphie arts. Beginning in the 1950s, he used his visual experiments with light and movement for many commissions. Between 1951 and 1954, he criss-crossed the capital, photographing shopfronts and signs. ln Les Halles, he photographed the hustle and bustle of the streets and focused his camera on the play of light on the pavements. Radical viewpoints and the use of double exposure contributed to a graphic vocabulary that was close to abstraction.
