By choosing the same tree as her subject, Von Maltzan offers an illustration of the passing of time.
It was not until the reunification of Germany, when she discovered the century-old trees in Mecklenburg, that these became one of the artist's favourite subjects. Seated on a stool in front of the trees, she draws on a roll of paper that she unfurls as the drawing progresses. She always starts at the bottom, working for several hours a day and noting in the margins how long she spends on each part. This concern with time contrasts with the meticulousness of her lines evocative of 19th-century German Romanticism.
