Masque
[1919]
Janco's masks, which were worn for Dada performances, readings and dances in the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, were invested with a magical function and a metamorphic power.
Marcel Janco participated in the first Dada events, notably through his costumes and masks made from pieces of cardboard, newspapers, wire thread and twine. They are simultaneously reminiscent of Picasso's Cubist constructions, ancient traditions and the attraction of primitive art. Attesting to a fascination with tribal dances, Hugo Ball, one of the founders of Cabaret Voltaire, stipulated that those who wore them should have "very particular body movements charged with pathos, even bordering on madness".
