Aktion 12
1965
With Aktion 12, Hermann Nitsch, one of the leading Viennese actionists, worked with a passive actor whose body was treated as a simple artistic material.
For eight consecutive hours and in a precise way, the participant's genitals are covered with various materials (blood, egg yolk, gauze, animal's brain...). The action evokes a mystical religious sacrifice, referring to the Passion of Christ as well as to fetishist imagery linked with castration and mutilation. Through the staging of violent, repressed sexual impulses, Nitsch's work challenged the conservatism of post-war Austria.
