Tire Test Column
2009
Oscar Tuazon explores the limits of architecture: low-tech housing and buildings in ruins. His approach to art is influenced by the “grunge” culture of Seattle, his native city, and by Walden; or Life in the Woods, a story written by Henry David Thoreau in which he reflects on his experience of living in a forest hut for over two years. Tuazon creates radical works which aim to reveal tensions between random assemblies of objects and the white cubes exhibition areas that display them. Tire-Test Column is a sculpture suggestive of Brancusi’s Colonne sans fin and questions the notions of verticality and balance. The concrete at the base of the column reveals sections of car tyres, giving the work an incomplete appearance.
