Noland made circular, centred compositions in which the emptiness of the unprimed canvas plays an essential role.
After discovering the way in which painter Helen Frankenthaler impregnated and spread her paint on the canvas in 1953, Kenneth Noland painted his forms in direct relation to their supporting media. Here, it is the square format of the painting that dictated the choice of the motif and its central position. ln a gesture that reveals the painting process, the artist, who was a Color-Field painter, repeated the pattern to the edge of the canvas using a colourful palette of cold and warm tones.
