Sechs Globen
(Six globes)
1992
Thomas Demand combines sculpture with photography. His procedure consists of taking an image from the media and reconstructing it in the form of a life-size sculpture in paper and cardboard. He photographs it, and then destroys the model. There is a sense of uncanniness in these scenes, which are both recognisable yet nondescript. Resulting from his reflections on the archive and photographic objectivity, Thomas Demand’s images hover between pretence and documentation. The artist thus highlights his medium’s ability to imply an illusion of truth, orchestrated by the media.
