The figure of the mythical Minotaur, with the head of a bull and the body of a man, is a central motif in Picasso's work, as much for its evocation of the themes of the bull and bullfighting as for its symbolization of the ambiguity of the human, halfway between god and animal. Picasso here depicts him for the first time, sombrely drawn in charcoal on a ground of beige and blue pasted paper. Seeming to run as fast as his legs will carry him, as if hoping to find the exit from the labyrinth, the attitude and the curves of his body contrast with the angular rigidity of the cut paper, suggestive of imprisonment. Picasso would return to the monster on several occasions, notably in 1933, when he drew the cover for the first number of one of the Surrealist Group's journals, itself called Minotaure.
