Woman Collecting Shellfish
1975
Born in 1930, David Goldblatt can be seen as the presiding figure of South Africa’s lively tradition of documentary photography. Over more than 50 years he has registered political and social developments in the country, interested in individuals as much as in structures. Taken in 1975, the photographs of the “Particulars” series concentrate on details of body and clothing. “Of my life experiences one that was crucial was that of working in my father's men’s clothes shop in Randfontein, where I acquired an awareness of bodily particulars that was technical rather than subjective.” The viewer is invited to note gestures and textures, to become aware of the singularity of each body and what it expresses.
