This convent is characteristic of an architectural style that goes against neoclassicism and the dominant rationalism.
Antonio Fernandez Alba is the only architect of the El Paso group, an artists' collective that revitalised the Spanish art scene and forged a link between the avant-garde movements swept away by the civil war and a modernity tightly controlled by Francoism. His critical thinking flourished through his contributions to the manifesto journal Nueva Forma and subsequent contact with the international network. He introduced the work of Alvar Aalto to
Spain, a country where modernity arrived very late and was rarely questioned.
