In this painting, several scenes and figures are superimposed. The eyes of the crazed man in the centre of the composition are appalled by the violence and misery surrounding him. The other figures seem to rise up out of his memories or thoughts. In this concentrated picture, everything speaks of pain. We think of Picasso’s Guernica, painted a few years earlier. Portinari was always concerned by the social conditions of the underprivileged and the ravages of war. He was one of the figures in the Indigenist movement.
