Influenced by Erich Mendelsohn’s expressionism and also by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Neapolitan Aldo Loris Rossi developed an organic architecture that interacts with its urban environment and whose “syntactic complexity” derives from the dynamic articulation of vertical and horizontal volumes clustered in accordance with a principle of organic growth (Unité urbaine à développement vertical, 1960). Both utopian and pragmatic, Rossi defined as early as 1959 the principles of multifunctionality (one building serving many functions) and polycentricity (organisation of clusters around multiple centres). There are many of his brutalist concrete buildings to be seen in Italy.
