Sick bizarre defaced creation
2009
Currently living in Berlin, where he is active in the alternative scene, Damien Deroubaix is probably the most Germanic of contemporary French painters. After a decisive trip to New York, he starts creating large compositions using wood engravings, cut and retouched with watercolour and acrylic, in a way that grounds him even more solidly in the German Expressionist tradition. In this piece, his first in the Centre Pompidou collection, he juxtaposes old cultural references with contemporary imagery of lurking violence. Its title refers to rock music, of the heavy metal variety.
