Pierrot malade
[avant 1920]
Federico Beltran Masses’ works, with their authentic feel and dark romanticism inspired by an Orientalist exoticism, also evoke the erotic aesthetic of Twenties films. The two figures in this picture, featured in several of his other works, do not seem to come from the same milieu or the same story. The artist has taken inspiration from the Commedia dell’Arte, giving each figure a role that fits their character: a dreamy, naive Pierrot and a stiff odalisque with a tense expression.
