The radical abstraction of this work is tempered by the representation of a primitivist figure.
The extreme radicality with which Jacques Lipchitz treats the human body leads him increasingly to geometric and stripped-down forms, as is shown by the schematic female figure hidden in this enigmatic volume. The black paint that covers the plaster accentuates its sobriety. lts monumental size and archaism are reminiscent of the obelisks of Antiquity and African art, which fascinated the sculptor by the clarity and purity of their forms.
