"These motifs are steeped in eroticism, but in the beginning, although I cut into my rounded volumes, it was to enable the adhesive to dry quickly".
lnfluenced by Surrealist experiments and informal art which he discovered in the 1950s, Takesada Matsutani joined the Gutai (instrument- body) group in 1963. Discovering the properties of cheap adhesive by chance, the artist went on to learn to direct these outgrowths, breasts or pockets by inflating them with a straw. Using his breath in this way, and true to the precepts of Gutai, the artist claimed to have “a real conversation with his material.”
