ln a spirit of collage Jean-Paul Chambas painted a portrait of Toulouse-Lautrec, based on a photographic self-portrait in which this 19th century painter is wearing the boa and hat of his friend and model, the dancer Jane Avril. Chambas presents the genius artist, disabled and dressed as a woman before an Egyptian bas-relief representing Queen Nefertari, the favourite wife of Ramses Il. For Chambas, the association of the two figures tells a story that questions "society's norms, differences and plays with identity".
