The Silence of Ani
2015
Francis Alÿs has developed since the 1990s a practice both conceptual and poetic that takes contemporary urban, geopolitical and anthropological issues as its subject. The Silence of Ani revolves around the “city of a thousand-and-one churches” that was the capital of mediaeval Armenia, today in ruins and lost amid the vegetation, on the Turkish side of the frontier. An imaginary view, bird callers played by a handful of teenagers and three small rebus-like paintings essay a tactful and discreet approach to its history. Between silence and music, a performance becomes image and a ruin becomes a landscape, a playground, a path to follow, an echo-chamber of a confiscated memory.
