Messersschnullerhände
(Mains aux tétines-couteaux)
1981
Through these hybrid abjects, Renate Bertlmann evokes the theme of maternity with a certain dose of irony.
Bertlmann produces a radical feminist body of work which explores representations of sexuality and eroticism. In 1975, she began developing a series of works created from teats or condoms, thus associating phallic and female objects to question contraception or pregnancy. ln this photograph, knife blades have been embedded into the teats which are
placed on the artist's ten finger tips. The image evokes ambivalent emotions, between softness and hardness, tenderness and aggression, vulnerability and power.
