Julia Codesido was a major figure in Peruvian Indigenism. When she was young she travelled around Europe, where her father was a diplomat. She returned to Peru in 1918, and later discovered the Mexican muralists. Her work shows the influence of Cubism in its simplified forms, and Primitivism in its motifs and hieratic quality. She brought out the nobility and beauty of the people of the Peruvian Andes, with their brightly-coloured traditional clothing.
