San Giorgio Maggiore à Venise
[1938]
This Venetian view by Dufy was found in a German dealer's apartment in Baden-Baden in January 1950 in the French occupation zone.
Art dealer Waldemar Strenger bought this watercolour in 1940 from Nico Mazaraki, a Greek dealer based in Paris whose portrait Dufy had painted in 1932 (Paris, Centre Pompidou, Musée National d1Art Moderne, on loan to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon). ln Baden-Baden, the work was transferred to the city's Collecting Point and was repatriated to France by the seventh convoy in July 1950. lt was entrusted to the Musée National d'Art Moderne by the sixth Artistic Recovery Commission in May 1951.
