The artist and colour designer André Lemonnier sees his own theoretical investigations of colour as continuous with those of the chemist Michel-Eugène Chevreul. After developing the Polyton disk with Jacques Fillacier, in 1976 he created a new colour tool in his Volume de couleurs. A double cone composed of a range of 1,555 shades structured as a series of 24 vertical plates each corresponding to one colour on the colour circle, this “colour volume” develops around a vertical axis graduated from black to white in 19 shades. Within this volume, playing on different levels of hue, brightness and saturation, André Lemonnier creates what he calls “colour paths.” He applies his colour systems to vast industrial complexes and new towns such as Marne-la-Vallée.
