Canapé Kandissi
1979
The expressiveness of this sofa illustrates the reinvention of an everyday object, which Mendini highlights, rejecting the hierarchy between art and design.
Alessandro Mendini, who cofounded Studio Alchimia in 1976, initiated the "Bau.Haus" exhibition in Milan in 1979, where he presented his Poltrona di Proust armchair and the Kandissi sofa. The latter is covered with a richly coloured fabric from the Gobelins workshops, a historic centre for creation and exceptional craftsmanship. Its classic style is reinterpreted through the asymmetry of the wooden back with its angular shapes and the structural use of blocks of colour inspired by Kandinsky's paintings.
