Chuck Close is one of the leading representatives of Hyper Realism, a style that emerged in the United States in the mid-1960s. Rejecting abstraction, but often thought of as close to Pop Art, the artists of this tendency chose neutral, immediately recognizable subjects, such as magazine illustrations or personal photographs, which they then scrupulously re-transcribed. The one and only subject of Close’s painting since 1967 has been the ID-type photograph, whose frontal close-up image he transfers into painting using a grid system. This system has further developed since the late 1980s, when he began to paint from digital images, offering a detailed rendering of the fragmentary pixels, as in this portrait of his friend Arne Grimcher.
