Untitled (Beside blank canvas)
(Sans titre (A côté d'une toile vierge))
2002
The early 2000’s saw Paulina Olowska develop an interest in learned societies and endeavour to reconstruct a contemporary modernism. In 2003, she staged the exhibition “In Lubelian” at the Cabinet Gallery in London. There she imagined a circle of intellectuals both modernist and humanist, attached to the universalism of the International Style and the idealism of Esperanto – a language created in Poland. In Untitled (Beside blank canvas), she conjures up these mythic figures, the painters of an age gone by. She is happy to confess a fascination with the idea that history is an invention of the past and as such endlessly reinterpretable.
