Criss-crossing the United States on the lookout for off-beat, deviant or marginal figures, Diane Arbus drew a familiar yet disturbing portrait of American society. Her subjects’ frontal pose and lack of reserve testify to the photographer’s sometimes compassionate desire to reach their private truth. In 1963, she frequented theatres, contests, festivals and more for a series she called “American Rites, Manners and Customs”. Her trademark is the square photograph, shot on a Rolleiflex 6 x 6, never retouched and white margins left visible.
