Self Performance
1972 - 1973
Since the early 1970s, the German artist Jürgen Klauke has developed a body of photographic work whose themes are the body, sexual identity, boredom and solitude. He often pictures himself in simple compositions, set in the middle against a uniform background, so accentuating the provocative character of poses that evoke gender ambiguity.Self Performance is a series of self-portraits in which the artist –an androgyne dressed in black leather here, a white dress there – sports a pair of fabric prostheses, mock sexual organs grotesquely emphasised to bring out the multiplicity of sexual identifications and to mock the schemas by means of which society seeks to confine and order gender.
