HHHHHH Un homme saoul en vaut deux
1952
This work was made in June 1952 when Guy Debord and Gil J Wolman were founding the International Lettrist, whose radical actions led to a break with the followers of Isidore Isou in October 1952.
lts title is a pastiche of the popular French adage: "an informed man is worth two "(forewarned is forearmed), in all likelihood a nod to Isidore Isou and Maurice Lemaître, who reproached the "scissionists" for their excessively inebriate practices. The preparatory sketches for this work show that Wolman wished to make a grid to accommodate, letter by letter, the message of the title, corresponding to the principle of the autonomisation of letters as defined by Isou in 1947. This work was reproduced in the first edition of the Lettrist Internationale review.
