The “colour investigations” of France and Michel Cler are intended to support colour design in urban planning. Acting as colour consultants for new towns, they developed the notion of the “urban colour landscape” as a way of articulating the colour identity of a place. The Nuancier des Antilles is a colour chart developed on the basis of precise observation of ambient lights and the colours of local buildings, rocks, plants and soils. This will serve as a reference for the definition of a “colour master plan.” Together with the urban plan itself, the colour master plan guides the specification of colours for the buildings to be constructed. Like many of their colleagues, the Clers also work with paint producers, creating colour ranges for the building industry.
