Puerto Rican artists Allora & Calzadilla have been making politically engaged work since the 1990s. Under Discussion, 2005, is the film of a performance on the island of Vieques, part of Puerto Rico, once used by the American military as a weapons testing ground. The site was abandoned in 2003, following long and forceful protests by locals, who then called for its decontamination. In the video, an activist on a makeshift raft offers an “eco-tour” of the island, highlighting the scars of military occupation.
