The work of Taysir Batniji, a Palestinian from Gaza now living in France, is characterized by the themes of departure, wandering and disappearance. In the photographic series Les Pères [Fathers], informed by the Middle Eastern tradition of the studio portrait, Taysir Batniji casts his eye on the portraits found on the walls of shops and other places in Gaza. These images, often faded and yellowed, sometimes dusty and askew, are most often portraits of what might be called “fathers” – tutelary figures: Arab leaders, well-known clerics – while also constituting a form of memory, of shared history.
